Android is an open-source Linux-based mobile operating system developed by Google Inc., but is available for use royalty-free if the user forgoes access to Google's services. It had an 88% share of the smartphone operating system units sold in the third quarter of 2016, surpassing its competitor iOS.
Android, like its competitor iOS, has a wide array of games available for download. As of December 2018, Android's proprietary Google Play app store has over 2.6 million apps.
Android was initially released on September 23, 2008, with the current version being 10.0 , released on September 3, 2019.
