Battlefield 1942 is a FPS (First-Person Shooter) designed by Digital Illusions CE (DICE), and published by EA Games. It was released in 2002 and was the first in the series of Battlefield games, it was followed by two expansion packs; Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome, and Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII. It is set during the Second World War, featuring theatres of operations such as North Africa, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and the Pacific; Italian theatres of operations was added in the; The Road to Rome expansion pack.

The countries that feature in the game are the United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, Canada (added in The Secret Weapons of WWII expansion pack), and Free France (added in The Road to Rome expansion pack) for the allies, and Germany, Imperial Japan, and Italy (added in The Road To Rome expansion pack) for the Axis.

The player has the option of playing the game on foot, as well as using various land based vehicles, aircraft, and water based craft.
