Berzerk is an arcade game released in 1980. The game was later ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Vectrex. The game was well noted for its use of voice synthesis, particularity with the robots saying "Intruder alert!" and, quite humorously, "Chicken, fight like a robot!" It was followed by a sequel, Frenzy.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Trapped in an endless series of mazes, the player's lone future warrior must blast his way past a series of patrolling robots who are out for his destruction. Care must be taken not to touch the walls of the maze, because they can electrocute him. The player must also watch out for the sinister Evil Otto, who bounces his way through walls and is totally indestructible while he madly seeks to zap the player's warrior into oblivion.
Scoring[edit | edit source]
You earn 50 points for every robot you shoot, plus a 10-point bonus for each robot in the room if you shoot them all before you exit.
Notes[edit | edit source]
Alan MacNeil, the original arcade game's designer, was allowed to have his signature be on every Berzerk game machine.
The Atari 5200 version was one of the first home videogames that produced voice synthesis straight from the cartridge itself, instead of through an add-on module.
