Conflict Zone: Modern War Strategy is a war-themed real-time strategy game, developed by MASA Group and published by Ubisoft for Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and Microsoft Windows.

Story[ | ]

It's early 21st century and the majority of the world's countries have created the ICP (International Corps for Peace), an organization dedicated to bringing about world peace. However, not all countries are keen to be involved and these persist in generating conflicts through the organisation GHOST. A secret organisation, which warrants only the economic interests of its members without any attachment to morals, GHOST, does not hesitate to create crisis situations with the goal of destabilising the worldwide equilibrium and endanger any chance of peace...

Gameplay[ | ]

There are 2 playable campaigns in Conflict Zone: the GHOST campaign, and the ICP campaign. Missions take place in locations like the Ukraine and Indonesia. Most missions require the player to build a base in order to successfully complete the mission. The civilians are taken to your base to earn money from propagandistic popularity, so instead of destroying supply depots like most games you have to kill the civilians that linger in the enemy's base. There are several buildings which can be built, including refugee/enlistment camps (refugee camps for the ICP, enlistment camps for the GHOST), barracks, vehicle factories, and logistics buildings (which speed up unit and structure construction/training times).

Game features[ | ]

Conflict Zone's main innovation was the use of propaganda, which was crucial in the game: acting in a way that brought public attention against the player's side would make the game harder. In addition, both the ICP and the GHOST have their own advantages. The ICP had more advanced units (more health points), but could command less units in total (140 units) than the GHOST, and ICP units were more expensive. The GHOST units on the other hand, were cheaper and could be fielded in larger numbers (180 units), but they were less advanced than their ICP counterparts (less health points). Despite the serious theme, the cutscenes had a mocking, dark humor touch.

Units[ | ]

The following is a complete list of all the Units available in Conflict Zone: Modern War Strategy.

Infantry[ | ]

  • Marine (ICP)
  • Soldier (GHOST)
  • Grenadier (both)
  • Bazooka (both)
  • Doctor (both)
  • Cameraman (GHOST, used to create propaganda)
  • Mine Clearing expert (ICP)
  • Spy (both)
  • Mechanic (both)
  • Commando (both)
  • Soldier in civilian clothing* (GHOST)
  • Paratrooper* (both)

The paratrooper and soldier in civilian clothing cannot be purchased from the barracks. Paratroopers can be obtained by calling in a paratroop helicopter to drop them at a location on the map, while the soldier in civilian clothing can only be obtained from the GHOST enlistment camp (by bringing civilians to the camp, they are trained and come out as various infantry units. What they are to be cannot be chosen by the player, it is chosen at random by the game, and often, a soldier in civilian clothing will come out of the camp). The soldier in civilian clothing is dressed like a civilian. Thus, ICP units will not fire until the player decides to expose them. Once exposed, they become regular soldiers and cannot revert to their previous appearance.

  • Reconnaissance Jeep (both)
  • Tank (both)
  • Mobile Artillery (both)
  • Troop Transporter (both)

Uncontrolable Units[ | ]

Uncontrolable units are units which are at the player's disposal, yet they cannot really be controlled. They may perform an attack against a target specified by the player, drop paratroopers, or scout out a certain area, but once they do what they have been ordered to do, they will leave the battlefield. There are other uncontrolable units that are always with the player, but will do things on their own, like the prisoner helicopter (GHOST) and the ambulance helicopter (ICP)

  • AWACS (ICP)
  • Reconnaissance Drone (GHOST)
  • Tactical Fighter (both)
  • Strategic Bomber (both)
  • Missile Launching Cruiser (ICP)
  • Nuclear Submarine (GHOST)
  • Paratroop Helicopter (both)
  • Prisoner Helicopter (GHOST)
  • Ambulance Helicopter (ICP)

Although both the ICP and GHOST have some units which are the same, some of these units are different in appearance. For example, both sides have strategic bombers, but the ICP strategic bombers are B-2 Spirit's, while its GHOST counterpart is a B-52 Stratofortress.
