Control is a third-person action-adventure game with elements of 3D Metroidvania. The player controls Jesse Faden, the newly appointed director of the Federal Bureau of Control.

Plot[ | ]

Seventeen years after a para-natural incident in her hometown of Ordinary, Jesse Faden finally discovers the location of the Federal Bureau of Control, a secret government organization tasked with handling disruptions of reality. Hoping to find her younger brother Dylan, who was taken by the Bureau in the incident's aftermath, Jesse enters their headquarters, called the "Oldest House" in New York, finding it almost abandoned. Directed to the elevator for "an interview" by the Finnish janitor, Ahti, Jesse finds the body of the bureau's director Zachariah Trench, who has seemingly committed suicide. After picking up Trench's firearm (the murder weapon in question), Jesse is transported to an alternate dimension called the Astral Plane, and completes a ritual that makes her the new Director of the Bureau. When she returns to the normal world, she finds the Oldest House invaded by a hostile force which she dubs "the Hiss".

As the story progresses, more regarding Jesse's past is revealed. As a child, she and her brother Dylan discovered an old slide projector in Ordinary's dump. The projector's slides opened doors to alternate dimensions, including one containing a supernatural being dubbed "Polaris" by Jeesse. Using the slide projector eventually led to an "Altered World Event" (AWE), resulting in the disappearance of the town's adult population. Jesse escaped with Polaris's help, but Dylan and the Projector were taken by the Bureau.
