Dino Crisis 2 is the sequel of Dino Crisis and continues with later events of the Dinosaurs, 3rd Energy, and Regina. It was followed by another sequel, Dino Crisis 3, for the Xbox.

Gameplay[ | ]

There are some gameplay changes in the second game, the game is more action oriented than puzzle or horror. Among the changes introduced for this version is that you no longer need to push a button for running, since the character is always running, you now can have a second gun, (machete, stun gun, firewall, chain mine and shock gun) and more weapons were added to the game (hand gun, shotgun, solid cannon, flame launcher, sub-machine gun, heavy machine gun, anti-tank rifle, missile pod, rocket launcher, needle gun, aqua grenade), besides changes on the gameplay the game also introduces new species of dinosaurs and lizards, like the Triceratops, Giganotosaurus, Allosaurus, Pteranodon, Mosasaurus, Plesiosaurus, Inostrancevia, Oviraptor, the game also adds the "extinction points" and "combo points" which help you to buy ammo (which is no longer scarce) and weapons and to unlock hidden features when the game is finished. Some of the features include Crisis mode, where the player faces a procession of dinosaurs in turn, (similar to the Survival mode seen in many fighting games) and a battle mode where players were able to play as certain dinosaurs.

Plot[ | ]

Regina is now on another mission, involving a facility located close to a town called Edward City. One year after the capture of Doctor Kirk, research on the Third Energy has continued, and a major anomaly has caused the whole island to be transported back in time to the era of the dinosaurs, along with all the human inhabitants. Regina also has a new ally, Dylan, who is playable through half of the game and has a strange connection to the events on the island. The character you play changes between these two at specific points in the game. Your goal is to rescue any survivors and retrieve data on Third Energy.

In this sequel, T.R.A.T. (Tactical Reconnoitering and Acquisition Team) has been sent into another time frame, which Edward City had disappeared into, to recover any survivors and the Third Energy research data. Regina, from S.O.R.T. (Secret Operations Raid Team) has been sent along due to her previous encounters with dinosaurs. On the island, the team sets up camp but is attacked by a pack of Velociraptors, and everyone at camp is killed except for Dylan, Regina and David. Our heroes are saved by the appearance of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, who scares away the Velociraptors and sends our heroes tumbling off a slope after being shot in the eye by David's RPG. And the game begins...

Regina and Dylan decide to split up as only she can open the electronic gates with her Stungun, and only he can open the gates covered in vines with his Machete. Dylan is attacked by Velociraptors on his way to the Military Facility. On his way there he sees a strange person wearing a Helmet that runs away when they see him. When he arrives at the Military Facility he is attacked by the T. Rex as well as two more Helmet people with crossbows that fire explosive circular saws. He runs into the facility and gets locked in after retrieving the key for the Research Facility, so he calls Regina for help.

Regina takes an alternate route to the Military Facility and stops at the Research Facility where she gets attacked by an Allosaurus along the way. When there she is attacked by the strange helmet people as well but manages to capture one. She removes the helmet to find a young teenage girl that can barely speak. She locks her up in the facility and heads after Dylan.

The two of them get the girl and take her to the Boat to lock her up there. Whilst there they find that people have broken in and destroyed all the equipment. The Time Gate and Engine Activator have been destroyed, so they can't get back to their own time and can't move the ship.

Whilst Dylan chains the girl up she stops struggling and keeps on staring at him strangely, which confuses him. He then heads to the Research Facility to find parts for the ship. When there he finds the place is completely abandoned and is filing up with foliage. He is attacked by Oviraptor's and has the keycard for the research facility stolen by a Compsognathus, locking him in the Facility. He eventually recaptures the Keycard after locking the Dinosaur up in a cage and retrieves the parts for the ship.

When he returns to the ship he finds that the girl has escaped. Regina says she looked through all the records and found no one matching her description, as if she doesn't exist. They get the ship fixed and are attacked by Plesiosaurus' and Pteranodon's on their way to the 2nd Island.

When there Regina starts exploring the Docks and heads into the Underwater Facility to get the 3rd Energy Reactor started up. When there she battles through Mosasaurus' and eventually reaches the Reactor Core, where an enormous Plesiosaurus that has eaten all the repairmen is waiting for her. She eventually kills it and gets onto dry land, ending up just outside the caves near Edward City. She meets up with Dylan and they get a call from David saying that he's found survivors at Edward City and that they should get over there as fast as they can.

They run through the Caves where they are attacked by Inostrancevia and eventually end up in an Allosaurus nest. After battling through the nest they end up in a large yard full of dead people and Velociraptors. A Triceratops turns up and begins chasing them, they attempt to get away in a Jeep by are relentlessly chased by the Triceratops through the forest. Eventually they kill it with a Machine Gun mounted on the Jeep and fly over a cliff into a large field. When there a pack of Velociraptor's surround them, but David turns up in a Helicopter just in time and kills all the Velociraptors. In the distance they see Edward City being attacked by Dinosaurs.

When they get there they find everybody has been killed by the Dinosaurs, so they begin exploring. The T. Rex turns up again and chases Dylan away. He escapes in a Tank by going through a gate to the highway that closes behind him. He is then attacked by another Helmet person, however the girl that previously escaped turns up and pushes them off the highway. She then runs away again, but accidentally leaves behind her necklace. Dylan tells Regina that he recognizes this Necklace as his sister had one just like it. He reveals that he used to be in a street gang and that one day a rival gang broke into his house and killed his Mother and Sister, so he joined the army to try and make up for it. They then decide to leave the city and return to the Jungle as they how have a Gas Mak that will allow to get through the deadly Poison Zone to the Missile Silo, as the Bridge had previously collapsed.

When there Regina heads for the Missile Silo whilst Dylan and David park the ship in the river behind it. When Regina arrives there she runs into the Silo and retrieves the Disk containing all the data about the 3rd Energy. As she leaves the T. Rex turns up again, but this time a Giganotosaurus turns up and kills the T. Rex, so Regina is forced to go back in to the Silo. The Giganotosaurus breaks in and manages to activate the Missile warhead. Regina manages to knock the Dinosaur out with the flamers in the Silo. She then Deactivates the Warhead, however the Giganotosaurus then wakes up and knocks the Missile over, destroying it. Regina escapes the burning building and meets up with Dylan and David.

Dylan and David have to open the watergate as it is preventing them going any further. Dylan defends David from Velociraptors while he opens it until an Allosaurus turns up and eats David, whilst knocking Dylan into the river, taking him downstream.

Dylan wakes up on a riverbank and finds the girl again who points to a place in the distance she calls 'home'. They both go through the Dinosaur infested jungle to the Unknown Facility. When they get inside a Hologram is activated of a man that reveals that the past and the present have both been moved 3 million years into the future. Everybody was killed by the Dinosaurs but the children were placed in life support systems that took away their ability to speak and taught them about this world and how to protect the dinosaurs. The man talks about his daughter Paula who reveals herself to be the girl Dylan is with. He then introduces himself as Dylan Morgan, Dylan in the future, making Paula Dylan's daughter. He says there is a Time Gate in the Facility that will return them to the present which can only be used once.

They reach the penultimate room to the Time Gate but are again attacked by a helmet person that has activate the self-destruct system, set to go off in 15 minutes. the helmet person is then killed by the Giganotosaurus that arrives. Dylan uses the computers to activate an Orbiting Satellite to fire a laser beam into the Facility, vaporizing the Giganotosaurus.

They reach the Time Gate, but the building begins collapsing around them, and Paula ends up with her legs trapped underneath rubble. So Dylan tells Regina to go through the time gate as she has the 3rd Energy Data Disk and make another time gate to go and pick them up. She reluctantly runs through the time gate and the Facility explodes just before Dylan and Paula are crushed by rubble. Their fate is unknown.

Enemies[ | ]

Compsognathus[ | ]

  • Length: 1,20 m (4 ft)
  • Height: 50 cm (1 ft 8 in)

In the previous game this small dinosaur attacked the player in packs, much like the Compsognathus in the movie The Lost World: Jurassic Park. In this game, Compsognathus is harmless and occasionally seen eating from carcasses or fleeing from the player. It does create a problem for the player when he is in the Research Facility; a Compsognathus steals the card the player must use to open doors, trapping him in the facility. According to the Dino Files these Compsognathus are attracted to shiny objects, much like magpies. Unlike the first game the compy can't be killed by the player.

Oviraptor[ | ]

  • Length: 2,50 m (8 ft 4 in)
  • Height: 1,30 m (4 ft 4 in)

These small carnivores, recognizable by their red crests, pointy beaks and playful behavior, are relentless pack hunters, chasing the player in groups. They spit an acidic poison to injure their prey. This behavior is probably based on that of the Dilophosaurus from Jurassic Park.

Velociraptor[ | ]

  • Length: 4,80 m (16 ft)
  • Height: 1,80 m (6 ft)

This is by far the most numerous enemy in the game. These powerful, fast carnivores can jump very high, and have a deadly claw on each foot. Much larger than the real Velociraptor, they look more like its larger relatives Deinonychus and Utahraptor and are obviously inspired by the raptors from Jurassic Park. The Velociraptor that attack the player get stronger as the game progresses, and have different color schemes depending on their strength. The standard, weaker raptors look just like those from the first game- dark brownish green. Stronger raptors are of a lighter green color, and later in the game even tougher, brown raptors appear. Velociraptor's Dino File speaks of blue colored 'Ultra-Raptors', which are the most powerful type.

Triceratops[ | ]

  • Length: 9 m (30 ft)
  • Height: 3 m (10 ft)

The only herbivore in the game, Triceratops is first seen relatively early in the game as a herd passes by in the background. It doesn't reappear until much later, when it chases the player who is on the back of a jeep. Triceratops are incredibly fast runners that charge their enemies like rhinos, inflicting severe injury with their powerful horns.

Allosaurus[ | ]

  • Length: 8,50 m (28 ft)
  • Height: 3 m (10 ft)

This large carnivore features a fearsome combination of strength and speed. Allosaurus is frightingly agile and insures that it always faces its prey with its armored head. Quick moves are needed to duck the creature's snapping jaws and to shoot it in its weak flanks.

Tyrannosaurus rex[ | ]

  • Length: 14,50 m (48 ft)
  • Height: 4,80 m (16 ft)

Tyrannosaurus frequently appears in the game, and cannot be killed on most occasions. As the creature's Dino File indicates, it is a relentless carnivore that even swims across rivers to pursue prey. One single Tyrannosaurus chases the characters over the course of the game, recognizable by the injury on its head, caused by an RPG which gouged its eye. At one point the player kills multiple rexes while driving a tank; these all have the same missing eye and are probably a reuse of the animation for the 'main' T. rex seen throughout the game. On the Dino battle mode when the second player selects T. rex it is black and doesn't have a missing eye, while player one gets a yellow one. T. rex is shown to be very resilient. The Tyrannosaurus is later killed by a Giganotosaurus.

Giganotosaurus[ | ]

  • Length: over 20 m (67 ft)
  • Height: over 7 m (23 ft)

This titanic carnivore is not seen until later in the game, where it kills a Tyrannosaurus. The same creature attacks the characters several times before being killed by a laser shot from an orbiting satellite. During the game, the creature can't be directly killed by the player, only stunned and knocked out. Its head alone is several meters long.

Pteranodon[ | ]

  • Length: 3 m (10 ft)
  • Wingspan: 6 m (20 ft)

This large pterosaur attacks the player in groups throughout the game. They dive-bomb to ram the player with their strong beaks, and are impossible to shoot while circling high in the air. Only when they come close to the player can they be shot and killed.

Mosasaurus[ | ]

  • Length: 6 m (20 ft)

This large marine lizard frequently attacks the player throughout the underwater portion of the game. Its presence is indicated by an ominous 'rumbling' sound in the water, produced as it charges towards the player. They sometimes attack in pairs.

Plesiosaurus[ | ]

  • Length: 17 m (57 ft)

These huge marine predators frequently attack the player on walkways over the water, towering over the player with their long necks and lunging when they get the chance. They are easily killed above water with a few shots in the neck. A Plesiosaurus is also encountered under water, serving as a boss of sorts, being much harder to kill. Interestingly, this creature is much larger than the Plesiosaurus that appear at the surface.

Inostrancevia[ | ]

  • Length: 3,70m (12ft)
  • Height: 1,20m (4ft)

This mammal-like reptile from before the Age of Dinosaurs, somewhat out of place amongst the other Mesozoic creatures the player encounters, is only seen in 2 brief sections of the game where the player travels through a volcano and the other where the player is in a missile silo. According to its Dino File, Inostrancevia prefers heat. While relatively slow, Inostrancevia are very durable thanks to their tough armor, and can inflict serious harm with their fearsome saber-like fangs. They can be flipped over using the Chain Mine weapon, exposing their soft bellies, or shot in the belly as they rear up to attack. With some luck, they can be knocked into lava pools.

Facts[ | ]

  • It's unlikely a Tyrannosaurus rex could survive a direct hit to the head with an RPG. Unless something detonated it early at a range that could take it's eye and not kill it, it would not have survived.
  • Giganotosaurus was not as large as depicted in the game. It was 14m (47ft) long and 5.50m (18ft) tall at most.
  • Pteranodon were more like seagulls. It isn't likely that they'd be hostile unless someone came too close to the nest. They'd most likely only attack someone that's heavily wounded.
  • An Allosaurus wouldn't be able to jump as high as it does in the game.
  • Inostrancevia is not a dinosaur. They were synapsids that lived millions of years before the dinosaurs.
  • Oviraptor didn't eat eggs as the dino-file suggested. They were most likely omnivores.
  • Plesiosaurus was not as large as depicted in the game. It was 3–5 m (10–17ft) long.
