F-22 Total Air War, also known as Total Air War or by its acronym TAW, is a fighter jet flight simulator game released in 1998 centering around the F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft. The game was published by Infogrames Entertainment and then later by Atari and was developed by Digital Image Design. The notable features in the game include the ability for the player to dynamically alter their flight campaigns and the realistic physics engine. The storyline in the game revolves around a war campaign over the Red Sea between two ambiguous fighting forces which both feature modern air-combat sorties that are launched against each other in an all out total aerial war.

Gameplay[ | ]

Because the campaign missions are dynamically selected by a computer algorithm built into the game based on the player's performance in battle and random events in the game, no two air missions the player plays should ever be the same. Videogame reviews often praise the game for this specific feature.

Modding[ | ]

Right from their debut, both F-22 Total Air War, and its predecessor, F-22: Air Dominance Fighter, were subject to modding on behalf of various internet groups. Whilst many mods generically consist of added single player missions, some groups have gone so far as to edit almost the entire game.

The most expansive modding of TAW is F-22 Total Air War 2.0, which supersedes F-22 Total Air War 2008. TAW 2.0 continues where TAW 2008 left off, hybridizing the two games (F-22 Air Dominance Fighter and Total Air War) and making radical graphics improvements and other major improvements in compatibility, features, and gameplay.

Given a lack of source code for the project, TAW 2.0 retains the limitations of the original TAW campaigns, namely that of unlimited enemy aircraft in campaigns and no ground warfare prompting calls for further improvement. Those who wish to contribute to the Air Dominance Project would find their constructive inputs welcomed and any assistance properly credited.
