Originally known as Project Ego, this ambitious game was frequently delayed. An Xbox Action RPG that was later ported to the PC that uses a lot of Light bloom. Originally intended for the Mac, then Windows, and finally making its way to the Xbox, Fable fell short of many fans' expectations, as many key features never made it into the final game. Many concerns were rectified with the release of the enhanced pseudo-expansion Fable: The Lost Chapters, which the developer says is closer to his original vision.
Notable for having a lot of hype surrounding it's freeform nature, only to turn out to be too ambitious for current technology. An expansion to Fable, Fable: The Lost Chapters was released late 2005. Fable II has been released on the Xbox 360, with Fable III soon to follow.
Story[edit | edit source]
In the ancient land of Albion, a young boy with a sister named Theresa, who can see things happen in her dreams, loses his family to bandit raiders who set fire to his village Oakvale. He is rescued by a Hero named Maze and taken into custody as a member of the Heroes' Guild where he builds up his abilities to use for either the cause of good or evil. As he graduates from his apprenticeship into being a full-fledged hero, he learns of who is responsible for his father's death and learns that some members of his family may have survived. The story leads the boy along the paths that he chooses and quests that he undertakes to his ultimate confrontation with the main villain, Jack of Blades.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
It is an action-based RPG adventure where the player uses three main upgradeable weapons—strength, skill, and will—against his adversaries and solve certain puzzles to unlock secrets. Slain enemies leave behind experience orbs which the player can collect and use to upgrade these abilities and add new ones by visiting the Heroes' Guild. The player can make choices that will guide him to the path of good or evil, whether those he comes across will either revere him or fear him. Those choices are also reflected in the character's overall appearance as he ages: choices for good will cause the Hero to appear sagelike, while choices for evil will make him appear demonic.
