The Fairy in Zelda has played many roles, from annoying sidekick to useful item. The most notable fairy in the series is Navi, the Hero of Time's sidekick and cursor for Z-Targeting. Navi was replaced by Tatl in Majora's Mask.
Fairies are captured in bottles for later use. They heal Link. If Link happens to be killed during a fight but has a fairy in a bottle, the Fairy will take it upon itself to break out of the bottle and revive Link. Fairies are usually found in Fairy Fountains.
