Creaks is a graphic platform adventure game developed and published by Amanita Design. It was announced on October 9, 2018, then released for the Apple Arcade on July 10, 2020, then on Microsoft Windows, the Playstation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch on July 22, 2020.

Development[ | ]

Radim Jurda and Jan Chlup, who would later become part of Amanita Design, came up with the idea for this game during college, so they attempted to create various prototypes of this game using Adobe Flash as their graduation work. They eventually met Jakub Dvorský, who then started helping them in this project. Jurda and Chlup were later admitted to join Amanita Design, forming a small team within the studio to develop the game.

Originally, the game was to be titled "Pareidolia". It was then changed to "Blik", and then "Creaks", because a game named "Blik" already existed.

The game was officially announced on October 9, 2018, with a short teaser trailer uploaded to Amanita Design's official YouTube channel.

After eight years of development, the game was released for the Apple Arcade on July 10 2020, then on Microsoft Windows, the Playstation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch on July 22, 2020.

Gameplay[ | ]

With Creaks being a 2D puzzle-platform game, the player controls a person who crawls through a hole in his bedroom wall and discovers an underground world, which houses a lot of monsters called "Creaks". The player has to solve puzzles while avoiding these monsters to advance into the game.

Puzzles in this game generally include the usage of buttons, lights, switches, and other mechanical devices to bypass the monsters and enemies, which, later on, turn into furniture when exposed to light, and reach the next area.

Trivia[ | ]

  • It is the first major game by Amanita Design that is not a point & click adventure.
  • The creaks are inspired by a phenomenon called pareidolia: when the monsters encounter light, they turn into ordinary household objects that they otherwise resemble.
  • The game includes different paintings influenced by 18th and 19th century aesthetics. Such paintings also serve as collectibles, and many of them also contain interactive elements or minigames that make them function as portals to another world.
