Fire agate forms in thin brown layers that refract the incoming light, giving the gem its "fire". The refraction often forms patterns which make it prized by sorcerers who claim to trace their lineage back to dragonkin. A well-cut stone has its outer layers polished and ground away until only the fire is visible.
