Accessing a map is a common feature found in many video game, although this is most notable in games with open-worlds such as MMORPGs. For computer games, the most common hotkey for opening the map is "M", and for console games, the map is usually mapped to the back button, or accessed through the pause menu.
Maps normally have a legend key, which will identify areas of interest including towns, dungeons, quests, side missions, and other activities. In some games, players have the ability to fast travel by selecting applicable spots on the map interface. The map is also handy for setting target markers, allowing the player to set their course of action or mark a spot that is otherwise not marked by an icon.
