Mario Tennis Aces is a sports video game developed by Camelot Software Planning and will be published by Nintendo exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. It is the eight installment in the series and will be the first Mario Tennis game to feature a story mode.
Gameplay[ | ]
Mario Tennis Aces' gameplay is similar and controls the same to its predecessor, the Mario Tennis series consists of the Super Mario cast playing various matches of tennis. Players can pick up to more than 15 characters ranging from Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Toad, Toadette, Bowser, Bowser Jr, Boo, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Spike, Chain Chomp and Koopa Troopa with each having their own unique play types. There are several new abilities that have been added exclusively to Aces that aren't available in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash such as the Zone Shots, Zone Speed and Special Shots. The energy gauge can be filled by rallying the ball and or performing Trick Shots and requires perfect timing to counter the ball. Zone Shots can be performed when reaching a nearby star in the ground and allows the player to aim where-ever they want by the Joy-Con's motion controls. Zone Speed allows the player to slow down time making it easier to counter trick shots, however it will deplete your energy gauge quickly. Special Shots are similar to Zone Shots but they require a full energy gauge. Both (Zone Shots and Special Shots) can damage a racket and a racket costs 3 bars before it breaks, if the rest of the racket's bar depletes, then it will cause the racket to break causing to lose or retire instantly until the next round where it gets replaced by another one. With proper timing, the special shot can be blocked which doesn't cause the racket to get damaged and increases the energy gauge. In doubles, each character shares their own energy gauge and it will provide a left-handed option for all characters.
Other than its gameplay, it will also include a 'simple' mode that excludes most of the unique shots and energy gauge which is available in normal gamemodes and is for those who want to play strategically. Another new feature in the game is a Swing Mode which is previously featured in Mario Power Tennis, it allows the player to 'swing' their racket with the Joy-Con's motion controls. Unlike the wii u predecessor, Aces features a more-traditional tournament mode in where the player will be able to challenge computer opponents. There is also an online mode available which supports up to 4 players (locally), a single match (multiplayer) and tournaments. Participating in tournaments will give you exclusive in-game outfits or either additional playable characters.
Tournament Demo[ | ]
A free demo for Mario Tennis Aces has been released on the Nintendo eShop at May 24, 2018. This demo includes the multiplayer tournament feature aswell as the ability to practice with bots, The demo allows players to play as Mario, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser being the starter characters while Waluigi, Toad, Spike, Rosalina, and Chain Chomp becoming unlockable characters. All players that participated the tournament will get a Classic Mario Outfit, where mario wears his well-known plumber outfit instead of his tennis one. It will also be available in the full game if released.
Courts[ | ]
Unique courts from Mario Power Tennis return and some courses have hazards thaat have the ability to be enabled or disabled that is similar to the Super Smash Bros. video games.

- Bask Ruins (a court set in desert ruins)
- Piranha Plant Forest (a court set in a forest - Piranha Plants can eat the ball to change the ball's direction)
- A court set in ruins filled with piranha plants
- Snowfall Mountain (a court set in a snowy plaza)
- Mirage Mansion (a court set in a haunted house in a similar fashion to luigi's mansion)
- Savage Sea (a court set on a flying airship over a sea, themed after New Super Mario Bros. U)
- A court with hexagonal tiles, featuring Mechakoopas and Bob-ombs
