Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the third iteration of the popular Metal Gear Solid series created by Hideo Kojima, entitled 'Snake Eater'. Rather than a direct sequel to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Kojima decided to shift the action back to the Cold War era of the 1960's, providing background to some of the key characters from the Metal Gear universe as a whole such as Big Boss and Ocelot. Responding to some of the criticism of the series' previous outing, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater provided a more focused and straightforward narrative than Sons of Liberty, while remaining compelling and involving. Core gameplay remained basically the same though the introduction of large outdoor environments, a close quarters combat system and the need to eat and heal injuries individually provided a more advanced playing experience.
