Mojang Studios (from Swedish "mojäng", literally "gadget"; formerly Mojang AB and Mojang Specifications) is a Swedish video game developer based in Stockholm, Sweden. It was founded by Markus Persson as Mojang Specifications in 2009, and transformed into Mojang AB in 2010 with Jakob Porsér.[1] The company is best known for creating the three-dimensional sandbox game Minecraft, which was released in 2011.
History[ | ]
Markus Persson and Rolf Jansson started development on the MMORPG game Wurm Online in 2003,[2] using the name "Mojang Specifications".[3] Persson and Jansson incorporated their business as "Mojang Specifications AB" in 2007. Persson shortly left and wished to reuse the "Mojang" branding; Jansson renamed his company to Onetoofree AB, and later to Code Club AB.
During the early development of Minecraft, Persson reused the name "Mojang Specifications". After declining a job offer at Valve Software, Persson incorporated the company as "Mojang AB" (Swedish for "Gadget Ltd.") with Jakob Porsér.[1] Persson then hired Carl Manneh as CEO, since both wanted to focus on the development of Minecraft.
On September 15, 2014, Mojang publicly announced that they would be bought by Microsoft for US$2.5 billion, and they subsequently became a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios on November 6 that year.[4] Mojang continues to operate legally as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
On May 17, 2020 (the eleventh anniversary of Minecraft), Mojang announced that they were changing their name to Mojang Studios, unveiling a new logo and a logo animation.[5]
