PlayTribes was a planned port of Starsiege: Tribes to the browser, similar to Quake Live. Development was canceled after InstantAction sold the Tribes franchise to Hi-Rez Studios in October 2010.

History[edit | edit source]

On March 17, 2009, GarageGames announced that they had acquired the Tribes IP and would be bringing Starsiege: Tribes to their browser-based gaming platform InstantAction. In May 2009, InstantAction announced that there would be a public beta sometime that summer, and were accepting beta applications.

At GDC 2009, InstantAction publicly unveiled PlayTribes, and during PAX 2009 they gave attendees access to the game. Soon thereafter, it was announced that PlayTribes would be delayed until December 2009 or January 2010.

On March 3, 2010, an early build of PlayTribes was leaked onto the internet.

During a PAX Prime 2010 interview, when asked about the future of PlayTribes InstantAction CEO Louis Castle stated "we will absolutely bring it back."

On October 23, 2010, InstantAction announced that they had sold the Tribes franchise to Hi-Rez Studios, thus canceling any development on PlayTribes. Hi-Rez Studios is currently working on Tribes Universe, an MMO, and Tribes: Ascend.
