Point of Existence is a series of total conversion modifications for EA Game's Battlefield series. It began as a modification for the computer game, Battlefield Vietnam. The modification featured content based on a hypothetical conflict between United States and Russian forces in Africa using a mix of real and prototype weapons and vehicles of each country. The team behind the PoE modification attempted to put an emphasis on allowing the public to see the inner workings of the mod, which can be seen by reading their news posts or browsing through the "Interactive Development Section" on their main site. A sequel for Battlefield 2, Point of Existence 2, was released on August 26, 2006. Unlike the original POE, Point of Existence 2 features the Ukrainian Army vs. the USMC & German Bundeswehr. == Release history == The mod had its first public release on the 23rd of August 2004, a 0.1 beta version. In December 2004 a version 0.2 Beta was released which included new weapons and vehicles. A version 0.3 Beta was released in February 2005. On May 29, 2005, the 0.4.2 Beta was released followed by the 0.4.4 patch in June of that same year, it was the final version for Battlefield Vietnam. The first public PoE:2 beta, '1.0' was made available for downloading via torrent on Thursday August 24, 2006 but was password-protected until the official release date of August 26, 2006. An unexpected turn of events happened when a member of a clan which had been testing the game for the PoE development team leaked the password on the PoE IRC server. Version 1.7 which was released on July 20, 2007 includes multiple new maps, weapons and vehicles on previous versions of PoE2. The current version is version 2.5 released on July 25, 2008. On the 16th of April 2009 the PoE team announced the cessation of development on the Battlefield 2 engine unless their latest release is incompatible with any future patches for the game. On the 10th of June they released the final version of their modification for the Battlefield Vietnam engine, version. 1.0. == Awards == PoE has recently won the โVisual Delight Award" from Mod DB, which recognizes the most visually appealing and professional efforts in the PC game modding scene. They have also received the title of 4th Best Released Mod Of The Year on January 28, 2006 in the Mod DB MOTY awards for their modification of Battlefield Vietnam. The event was broadcast on the Electronic Gaming Live Network. The sequel, PoE2 won the 2006 Mod of the Year award on Mod DB. ==References== <references/> 2. http://bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9496 ==External links== *Official PoE Website *PC Games 11/06 Edition (German) article *PC Action article featuring Point of Existence (German) *TotalBf2.com previews PoE2 sv:Point of Existence
