Porygon2 (ポリゴン2, Porigon Tsū) are a fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Porygon2 in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.

The name Porygon2 suggests that this Pokémon is a second, upgraded version of Porygon, or it could mean Porygon squared. The name "Porygon" is, in turn, a Japanese form of the word polygon (see also: Engrish).

It is the only Pokémon to feature a number in its name that is not spelled out (e.g. two), although Nidoran♀, Nidoran♂, Farfetch'd, Mr. Mime, Ho-Oh, Mime Jr. and Porygon-Z also have non-letter characters.

Biological characteristics

Porygon2 has an appearance similar to that of its pre-evolved form, Porygon, i.e. a bird-shaped red-and blue ornament. Unlike Porygon, Porygon2's design is much smoother, having curved instead of angular surfaces. This may represent the fact that computer and video game graphics are now smoother, not blocky. Porygon2 resembles a toy drinking bird and moves like one in Pokémon Colosseum. Porygon2 also resembles a methanol molecule. The transition from Porygon to Porygon2 also resembles the process of Subdivision in 3D computer graphics

Porygon2 is an artificial, man-made Pokémon, the others being Porygon, Mewtwo, Porygon-Z and Castform. It consists entirely of programming code, thus having the ability to convert its corporeal body back to data and transfer itself through the Internet. It was developed by the fictional company Silph Co. as an upgrade/"evolution" to Porygon, which had been an earlier release.

Porygon2 is supposed to be an improved version of Porygon in every way. It has better statistics, for one, and enhanced abilities. Its artificial intelligence has been developed to such a degree as to give it the capacity to learn on its own from its surroundings and experiences. This results in Porygon2 occasionally exhibiting behavior or motions that were not included in its original programming.

Porygon2 was originally intended to be used as a space probe. Unfortunately, since it can't even fly, such an application has been abandoned. Silph Co. seems to have fixed that problem by Pokémon Diamond and Pearl; Porygon's next model, PorygonZ, can hover above the ground.

As opposed to other evolved Pokémon forms, Porygon2 is 7 inches shorter than Porygon, which is 2 ft 7 in, Porygon2 is 2 ft 0 in. Porygon2 also weighs less than Porygon. This was probably done to show that as technology improves, it has the tendency to become smaller for more convienent use.

In the video games

Porygon2 first appears in Pokémon Gold and Silver, and is the second form in the Porygon evolutionary line. It evolves from Porygon by means of trading it while holding a particular item, and it also evolves into Porygon-Z when traded while holding a particular item. It did not have an evolution until the release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

It appears in other Pokémon games, such as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team. It also appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

In the anime

So far, Porygon2 never appeared and probably never will appear in the Anime, most likely a result of Porygon's appearance in Dennō Senshi Porygon, an episode banned worldwide after causing seizures. It has the distinction of being the only Pokémon from the first three generations that hasn't made an appearance. It is more than likely that its evolved form, PorygonZ, will never appear as well. Porygon2 does, however, appear in the Johto Pokérap.
