Hey God Hand Fans

Just want some help on the God Hand Wiki.-Gobi-Aoi 19:38, November 17, 2010 (UTC)

How can I make my wiki gaming? because I accidentally put entertainment.

Spotlights and Cross-wiki footers

I have created a set of cross-wiki footers with spotlights(featured wikis), seen here or here on my test wiki. The purpose is to replace the dated cross-wiki footers(that only promote already popular wikis, like the Wiki psuedo-hubs do) and bring more editors to the gaming hub to contribute to articles related to the gaming wikis they frequent.

The footers reside on the central wiki, and the spotlight decisions would be handled on the gaming hub by local admins, much like it is with the Amine/Manga footer & spotlights

I'm not sure about the links on the left side, Forum, Answers, and all IRC links on the hub are bad.

So you are saying that these Gaming Footers are being updated and that they should be replaced? Conker's Bad Fur Day 22:42, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

Those gaming footers were just made on my test wiki and would be transferred to the central wiki to replace this one and others. when they are on the central wiki they can be used on all wikis, and anyone can update them, except for the spotlight part which would be decided here on the gaming hub.--Sxerks 23:02, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

I've seen this discussion, and it is partiality the reason for the new design(the original concept is very old, I just never had the time to put it together). The old design tries to restrict wikis to ones with a certain # of pages or users, this one uses all of them and spotlights the one that "want to be spotlit". The wikis currently listed on the new footer are directly from the "star listings" on the Portal pages on the hub. The height of the footer can be increased if the listing is too compacted with the scroll bar.--Sxerks 19:12, September 24, 2011 (UTC)
My feedback in the prior discussion mainly involves two points:
  • I want individual wikis to be able to do their own custom prioritized promotion of related wikis (or not, if they choose not to), independent of whatever the template is centrally highlighting/spotlighting.
  • I want the total number of wikis in the footer to be restricted (about 10 outside the highlight/spotlight list) so it doesn't become an over-crowded link fest that most people will just mentally block out.
I believe my feedback for that prior discussion still applies to the design showcased on the test wikis. As for height, if anything, I'd want the footer height to be shorter. If it looks ugly and crammed with scrolling, then I think that's indicative that you are trying to put too much into a cross-wiki promotional footer. -Afker All hail AliceSoft! 05:01, September 25, 2011 (UTC)
For your fist point, anyone can make a cross-wiki footer, and because my version is modular other more personalized footers can be based off of it, such as replacing the "all" sub page with a smaller listing. Having multiple footers for different genres does separate "related wiki", the current version being used on central has completely unrelated wikis.
In between updated the Amine/Manga footer I created the Dndfooter which is very specific and even linked to the "Tabletop Portal" on the Hub instead of just the Hub. If the new footers are used, I will may use the old and the new.
If you personally want to restrict the number of wikis list you can. Though, if it is 10 or 100 it is already "mentally blocked out", it is mainly just a list for people to look through.
The test footer is shorter than the current one, and since they reside at the bottom of the main page their height is not important. My point about the height is not that it is ugly or cramped, it just may be easier to scroll though the listing.
The Purpose of a cross-wiki footer is cross-wiki promotion, bringing traffic to your wiki and in exchange pointing out others. Bringing people to the Hub to edit articles to help point to their wiki(see heading below), and applying for spotlights, which is really what most people are going to see when they glance at the footer(because of the wordmarks).--Sxerks 17:01, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Main Page and Portals

The main page and portal pages are out of date and have excess/unused info on them, and can be trimmed down.

The main page logo is redundant(with the wordmark), featured media is unnecessary, featured wiki would be replaced by the cross-wiki footers(see above), new & notable could be replaced by wikis with upcoming games or DLC during that specific Quarter.

On the portal pages, all of the links in the "star list" should link to a local article, which will then link to the actual wiki or wikis. See the Thief test page for an example. Similar to the lists on the main page of the Amine/Manga Hub.

Some wikis need to be on the portal can I please put them on per discussion. The wiki does really need a Main Page revamp plus a new logo. This one is getting old :p. File:Wiki-background also needs changing. Per discussion. Conker's Bad Fur Day 22:17, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

Articles

Some articles are unnecessary on the hub, such as Character pages or any other that would have a larger article on a specific Wiki. Example: Garrett vs Thief Wiki: Garrett and Category:Pokémon. Note on the Thief test page the inter-wiki links for characters and items.

The main game articles should really be short and to the point, and not just full copies of wikipedia articles. They should also direct users to a specific wiki to find more info, that's what a hub does. I have made some alteration to the main infobox and an article to show what I mean. This is similar to the format on the Amine/Manga Hub.
