Dark Horizons Lore: Invasion is a Mech simulation computer game developed by independent game studio Max Gaming Technologies and published by GarageGames.[3] Built using the Torque Game Engine, the game is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.[4] Although it was originally a commercially sold title, the game is currently free to download.[5] In 2019, the game was modded to make multiplayer run smoothly by the player community. Community members created an informal player site and continue to set up multiplayer games.[6]
Gameplay[ | ]
The game is a mixture between first person shooters games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and mecha simulation games such as MechWarrior. The player can select between two different factions and various different MAV types, with each being equipped with unique abilities and weapons. You can also customize your MAV to some extent, such as being able to trade speed for armour or vice versa. The game has support for various different playing modes, such as equivalents of Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Players can switch between first-person or third-person view while playing the game. Although primarily focused on multiplayer, single-player is allowed through the use of computer controlled bots.
Story[ | ]
The game takes place in a futuristic world in the year 2155 where several factions are battling for control over the planet.[7] The most important of these are the Federated States and the Eastern Confederation[8] They are fighting over "No Man's Land", what was once North America. Due to high levels of radiation, soldiers fight each other through the use of Mechanized Assault Vehicles, machines connected and remotely controlled by the minds of their pilots.[9]
Reception[ | ]
The game was positively received by critics, with GameShark commenting that "is easily on par with any major title from a top of the line publisher."[10] gametunnel rated the game highly, praising its multiplayer on-line game-play, although being more critical of its single-player mode.[11] JUEGOSLIBRES.net also praised the game, although it did state that the games graphics and sounds were not on par with some other games.[12] The game also currently holds a four star rating at The Linux Game Tome[13]
