Known as the Interactive Digital Software Association until 2003, the ESA is a regulatory agency set up by and for the video game industry to try and keep themselves out of trouble. They are best known for the Entertainment Software Rating Board, which was established in 1994. In 2000 they also established the ESA Foundation.

They also do work such as looking after copyright violation of games on the internet, as well as lobbying the government regarding gaming laws.
