The Family Computer Disk System was an add on for the Family Computer in 1986 that used a non-standard 3" floppy disk. It allowed games to be read from floppy disks instead of the traditional cartridges. This was advantageous because disks were a relatively cheap and re-writable media at the time, but disadvantages included lower quality sound and graphics.

A special feature of this peripheral is that you can save your game progress directly to the disk rather that use a password to re-enter levels already played; is very useful for game with many variables, such as RPG games.
