Geopolitical[ | ]

Germany in the present day is a member of both the European Union and NATO, however, many video games feature the historically significant Nazi Germany (also known as the Third Reich), which relates to the period in history from when Adolf Hitler was declared Chancellor of Germany, to his death at the end of World War II. Other games may show the German Empire (also known as Imperial Germany, or the Second Reich), which was the German nation state from 1871 (when Germany became unified), until the Kaiser's abdication in 1918, at the end of World War I.

In the aftermath of World War II, Germany was divided by the Soviet Union and the Allied Powers into West Germany and East Germany. Before the Soviet Union was dissolved, Germany was reunified into the nation state as it exists today after unanimous agreement between France, the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom.
