The Kirby series originated as unique 2D platformers. Game designer Masahiro Sakurai was a driving force behind this series before being known for Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee. What made the Kirby games different from the standard Super Mario Bros. game was that the main character, Kirby, didn't (and couldn't) simply jump on the heads of enemies to do away with them. He could eat them. Swallow them whole and take their power, which he would use against his enemies. To further differentiate from Mario, Kirby could float, and for a good while, too.

Over the years, there have been some spin offs of the series. These include the simple racing game Kirby Air Ride and the offbeat semi-platformer for the Nintendo DS, Kirby: Canvas Curse.
