Kyle Katarn is a former mercenary turned Jedi Knight from the Star Wars Extended Universe. Kyle made his first appearance in the first-person shooter Star Wars: Dark Forces and went on to star in Star Wars: Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.
In Dark Forces, Kyle is a mercenary working for the Rebel Alliance. In this game he helps to recover the Death Star plans and singlehandedly destroys the Dark Trooper Project.
In Jedi Knight, Kyle discovers that he is a Force-adept and goes on to discover the Valley of the Jedi and defeat the dark Jedi Jerec and his minions. The game allows the player to choose whether Kyle joins the light side or dark side of the Force, though in the later games it is assumed Kyle chose the light side.
In Jedi Outcast, Kyle has abandoned the Force, and is working for the New Republic when he finds that the dark Jedi Desaan is trying to capture the Valley of the Jedi in order to artificially infuse the Force into Imperial soldiers. Kyle re-embraces the Force, returns to the Valley of the Jedi and defeats Desaan. At the end of the game he accepts an offer from Luke Skywalker to join the Jedi Academy.
