Mac OS refers to a series of operating systems used by the Macintosh family of computers developed and released by Apple, Inc. prior to the release of Mac OS X (that would later be referred to as OS X and macOS). These operating systems were released between 1984 and 2001. Originally referred to as System Software in its earliest releases, Apple rebranded it as Mac OS with 7.6.
