The SNES Disk Drive was an expantion for the SNES that would allow it to play CD based games.

History

The SNES Disk Drive was made to compete with the sega cd. this would be developed by sony, however after nintendo realized that sony had all the rights to the add on, nintendo started to work with philips, who was sony's rival at the time. sony, outraged by this, started developeing games for the sega cd, and also stoped working on the add on for nintendo, and released it as it's own counsel, called the playstation. philips released the add on as it's own independent counsel, now known as the CD-i.

Legacy

SNES Disk Drive's design was later used with the satal-view. there was also an add on with a simaler name called the N64 Disk Drive.
