Teeworlds is a fast-paced sidescrolling multiplayer-only computer game. The game features cartoon-themed graphics and physics, and relies heavily on classic shooter weaponry and gameplay. The controls are heavily inspired by the First-person shooter genre of computer games. The latest release is 0.5.2, released on October 26, 2009.[1] As of version 0.4.0, the game's name changed from Teewars to Teeworlds,[2] with the developers citing unspecified legal reasons.[3]

Teeworlds is still under development, but it is playable and can be downloaded free of charge at the Teeworlds home page. Versions for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X are currently available. In December 2007, the source code was made available to the public under the terms of an open source license. To finance hardware and offset hosting costs, the developers accept donations from players, but these are not compulsory.[4]

Due to hacking attacks and spamming the main Teeworlds developer Magnus Auvinen decided to stop development and support Teeworlds August 29, 2010. He organized a team of volunteers to continue the development and support of Teeworlds.

Gameplay[ | ]

Teeworlds presents itself as a crossover between classic sprite-based shoot-em-up games of the arcade era and modern-day first-person shooters. It is played on two-dimensional, side-scrolling maps typical of the platformer genre, but utilizes FPS-style keyboard controls for moving, switching weapons and chatting.[2] A mouse reticle is used for aiming. The game also sports a grappling hook and double-jump mechanics for manoeuvring.

The weapons are inspired by FPS games such as the Quake and Unreal Tournament series.[2] The player begins with a wooden mallet for close combat and a pistol. The first does a lot of damage, but requires the enemy to be in close proximity. The pistol does the minimal damage, but is effective over greater distances and regenerates its ammunition over time. Spread throughout the map, the player can find additional weapons in the form of a shotgun and a grenade launcher. The shotgun shoots multiple pellets which inflict negligible damage individually, but are dangerous when many hit simultaneously. The grenade launcher has the potential to do a lot of damage because its blast causes splash damage. Its drawback, among others, is that it fires in a distinctive arc, making aiming a skill of its own. The spawn locations of these weapons are needed both to initially acquire them and to rearm them once their ammunition is depleted. On some maps, a katana sword is also available with a extended respawn time. This weapon kills other players in one hit but, as a melee weapon, its range is highly limited. When attacking, the katana thrusts players forward, giving it greater range than the wooden mallet. The grappling hook and double jump provide extended mobility, allowing advanced players to dodge incoming fire and quickly maneuver around the map. With the release of version 0.4.0, the development team added a new weapon, the laser rifle.[5]

Game modes include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture The Flag.

User created content[ | ]

Teeworlds is open source, includes a map editor, and uses simple image files for most of the games graphical content. As a result, it may be modified and extended, from cosmetic content additions to core engine functionality. There are some game modes created by the community basing upon the Teeworlds server. The code is designed that own game mods can be easily integrated into the server.
