A Tile in gaming is classed as an area on a 2-dimensional plane that connects and tessellates with other areas of the same shape and size, that in turn form the basis for the player's environment. The most common shapes used are squares and hexagons. Tiles are used as a concept in many video games, especially 4X video games.

Resources

Tiles have an underlying terrain class that typically limits the bonuses available or what may be built by the city in the vicinity; tiles usually contain one resource, but may have one or more geographic features that grant bonuses or unlock the building of particular buildings or wonders (such as coastal access, or a river).
